Today was a very interesting day! I did not get any time Friday because I did not realize until the last minute that the library closed at 5:30 on Friday. I'm not too worried, I'm already over the 100 hour mark! That is so crazy to think about.
Anyway, today started off with the student worker having forgotten they had taken the usual worker's shift. So they (I am choosing not to reveal gender out of privacy concerns) were over two hours late. After a flurry of phone calls, I knew I'd be fine holding down the fort until the next student worker arrived at 3:00. The worker who was supposed to be here arrived a bit after 2:00 so all became well at that point. I attempted to check e-mails and get caught up with that, which I did, and started to work on the Ask-A-Librarian libguide. I got a few changes made and things added. Then, however, the Internet and Network connections all went out, so that was another round of phone calls and emails and talking to harried and end-of-the-semester-stressed students worried about lack of Internet. Now, at 5:30, everything seems to be working again. I leave at 6 so we shall see if all remains quiet for the rest of the evening.
This was a really important shift for me because it helped me practice following protocol, staying calm, manning the fort, etc. I was actually surprised I didn't "freak out," but I suppose it's because I don't give myself enough credit that I am good at this and I know what I'm doing. Well, here was proof!
