Hours so far: 28/135
We finally got the issue with the library's "S:" drive fixed, so that now I have access to it, which is really great and very helpful. I can now have access to the student worker file but also the other librarian's files and documents. I added a folder of m projects under the student worker folder, not only so the librarians can track my projects and the progression of my to-do list, but also so that if I have student workers work on projects for me, they can have access to the files.
I got to help a few different students today, with primarily technical questions. I didn't realize I knew so much abut PowerPoint, but I guess you never really forget that stuff. The student was very grateful and appreciate my help, which is what makes it all worth it. This is why I want to be a librarian: to equip people of all ages and backgrounds to excel in their coursework and thus have an excellent future and realize their dreams and goals and God-given callings and potential. My job as an academic librarian-in-training is to not only gain experience in all this but to learn how to effectively instruct and help students increase their information literacy.
Every day that goes by, I am getting increasingly confident here at the Reference desk. I am more quick to help students that approach, more confident in directing student workers, etc. It is nice to be somewhat in charge in a setting in which I am comfortable and confident. I am putting all the things I'm learning in class (the theory) to work in the real world (the practice). Things are connecting and taking shape in my mind in concrete ways. When I first started, I was a bit overwhelmed, but now that I'm finally getting my bearings, my confidence is growing and my performance (I hope) is improving.
